			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" src="http://www.rainbowskill.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/aggression1.jpg" alt="" width="180" height="148" />Many of the best business folks, entrepreneurs and even just true lovers of life have been &#8220;out there&#8221;.  Some aggressive folks have larger than life personalities, some even boorish, arrogant and tough to be around at time.  Other aggressive business peopleare more demure, subdued and even somewhat introverted.  When I talk about being aggressive in business it does <strong>not necessarily represent a personality trait</strong> but rather a way in which decisions and risks are researched, evaluated, reviewed, taken and managed.  People who are prepared to take risks, be aggressive and fail (sometimes massively) if persistent are the ones we hear and read about eventually.</p>
<p>A real life example to validate.  My wife and I enjoy Euchre and play on our iPhone&#8217;s.  One of the interesting features is a stats page that tracks your percentages.  In looking at my stats I notice the following:</p>
<p>Hands     349 Won     318 Lost</p>
<p>Tricks    1,557 Won  1,437 Lost</p>
<p>Pretty mediocre performance but the interesting stat is this:</p>
<p>I called trump 165 times and won 141 (85%) of the time.  So 25% of the hands I played I called trump (which seems statistically predictable with 4 players).  This suggests to me that I HAVE NOT been overly aggressive in calling trump given you would think that if you are neither conservative nor aggressive you would call trump about 25% of the time. </p>
<p>The risk in being more aggressive in Euchre (as in business) is the unknown variable&#8230;in this case what does your partner have in their hand.  I will repeat this experiment making a concerted effort to be more aggressive.  Not STUPID aggressive but in a calculated way where I trust more that my partner has a trick up their sleeve.  I&#8217;ll report back on the results and see what conclusions the data present.</p>
<p>Here is my question and my challenge&#8230;.ARE YOU AGGRESSIVE ENOUGH???  I&#8217;m not talking about turning the dial from 2 to 9, I means moving from a 3 to a 4 and seeing what happens, then moving from 4 to 5 and seeing what a difference it means to your business or your life.</p>

<p>If you are unclear on what product/market fit is, you need to&#8230;.listen <br />If you are pre product/market fit&#8230;.listen <br />If you are post product/market fit&#8230;listen </p>
<p>There are some great examples as well as great lessons in when to market and when not to market, how to save early $$ and how to make sure that you are on the right path. </p>

<p>I was asked to contribute to a book that was being pulled together by Terry O’Hanlon from <a href="http://www.reliabilityweb.com" target="_blank">Reliabilityweb.com</a> (a thought leader in our space).  Terry did a great job of collecting thoughts from many senior and very experienced folks in the Operations and Maintenance industry.  My particular piece of insight is on page 23 but I hope you’ll take a minute and flip through the book and I hope and expect you will find some nugget of knowledge that will be applicable to your daily life regardless of whether you are on the Maintenance and Ops side of a business or in a completely technology focussed industry.</p>
<p>The book was just completed in the last few days and there is some really good advice.  The eBook and slideshare in general is a really great way to receive and to share information, thoughts and ideas across a wide variety of industries and audiences…look for more slideshare stuff in the future from me.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For some time now I have been meaning to move my blog to a more professional format and focus on providing meaning regular guidance and thoughts for my audience.  I have a full time job as most of you know running a great Company and working with a great group of people at <a href="http://www.ivara.com">Ivara Corp</a>.  Running any company is a lot of work but in the past week a great entrepreneur and great blogger <a href="http://www.twitter.com/cdixon">Chris Dixon</a> said it perfectly&#8230;&#8221;VCs / entrepreneurs who say they don&#8217;t have time to blog: please show me your calendar and I guarantee I can find things less important&#8221;.</p>
<p>I have retitled and refocused my blog to talk about my thoughts and experience in running a tech company and pass along things that I find or experience that I hope will help you be MASSIVELY successful based on my past years and current experiences.  I also have a <a href="http://paulmarshall.posterous.com/">Posterous site</a> which moving forward I will use for pictures, some video and some thoughts that don&#8217;t really justify a full blog post but are too big to Tweet about.  All my SM &#8220;outposts&#8221; (thanks <a href="http://www.chrisbrogan.com">Chris Brogan</a>) will be linked to this site and I look forward to engaging with you in any or all of those areas. </p>

<p>OK so I am a big Neil Peart fan and a bit of a drum geek but having heard Neil speak and his story it is an excellent example of Malcolm Gladwell&#8217;s 10,000 hr rule in his Outlier book. (I have linked to my favorite solo of his on Youtube for my pleasure as much as yours)</p>
<p>In my opinion Neil is probably the greatest drummer in the world, if you disagree thats OK as long as you can acknowledge that he is one of the best at his craft. Neil started as a kid (pre-ten years old) laying magazines out on his bed, listening to music and beating the covers the magazines. At 10 he got a drum pad (not a set) and practiced on the pad. As an early teen every spare moment was spent on a second hand drum set. Playing along with songs he liked, making up new stuff, trying stuff he hadn&#8217;t seen done before and being creative&#8230;innovating (even though he didn&#8217;t see it that way at 14). Neil played in bands and played solo&#8217;s eventually forming the band Rush continually driving himself to do more, get better, push the envelope.</p>
<p>The interesting thing that most people who are true outliers will understand is that he did this not just because he was driven to be the best (although that was &#8216;a&#8217; factor). He did it because he LOVED IT! Whether it is Gladwell or Vaynerchuk or any of the other experts it is obvious to all that everyone should be looking to match what they LOVE doing with what they get paid to do.</p>
<p>The formula looks like this:</p>
<p>The more you love something the more you are prepared to do it, the better you get at it, the more people will find you and ask you/pay you to do it for them, the more fulfilled and happy you will feel and the better person you will be for all your loved ones.</p>
<p>Find your passion, follow it, work hard at it.</p>
<p>Are you? If not, make a change. Don&#8217;t say you can&#8217;t afford to&#8230;be practical about planning the swith but&#8230;can you afford not to?</p>

That without this feature or that tweak, nobody will want to use it at all.   Bollocks. Most software has a tiny essence that justifies its existence,   everything after that is wants and desires mistaken for needs and   necessities.</p>
<p>The easiest way to force the insight of what can be lived without is by   playing a game of constraints: You have to ship on Friday, you can’t add more   people, you can’t work nights. Fixed resources, fixed time. All that’s left to   give is scope. It’s amazing how creative the cuts and sharp the sacrifices   become when you’re backed into a corner. It’s when you have to choose that you   make the best choices.</p>
<p>For every 1 day estimates of a task, there’s a simpler version of that you   can do in 3 hours, and an even simpler still you can do in 30 minutes. Back   yourself into a corner and these versions will vividly appear before your eye.   You can always do less.</p>

<p>Jason Fried and 37Signals are a company to be admired for lots of reasons.  This is one of their recent short posts which is a great reminder that what customers want and what they need are not always the same thing and that adding features to a product does not necessarily make it better and in fact can make it worse! </p>
<p>Don&#8217;t build a custom application for a broad target market.</p>

<p>For all entrepreneurs, startups and business folks this is an important lesson to remember.  Mistakes are going to be made and that is good.  Failures will be had and those are learning experiences.  It is what you do after you have been hit that is important.  There is no such thing as an overnight success, ask anyone who you think is one to tell you their story and I think they will tell you&#8230;. </p>
